Sabo is part of the powerful military organization opposed to the World Government and called The Revolutionaries or the 🪖 Revolutionary Army. He is the second most influential member of this movement after Monkey D. Dragon aka Dragon the Revolutionary (Luffy’s father) who is precisely its leader.
Born into a noble family in the Kingdom of Goa located on Dawn Island, Sabo is the son of Outlook III and Didit. He has an adopted brother by the name of Sterry who is the current King of the Kingdom of Goa. In addition, he became the spiritual brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace after the three had toasted together and exchanged their cups of sake which represent the cup of brotherhood.
After it was believed he was dead when a Celestial Dragon blew up his ship, Sabo reappeared in the Dressrosa Arc. He had come among other things to win the Mera Mera no Mi, the Devil Fruit of his late adoptive brother Ace, in the tournament held in the Corrida Coliseum. We discover in the third volume of One Piece Magazine that Sabo’s capture bonus amounted to 602,000,000 Berrys.
Appearance of Sabo
It is in a flashback of Luffy that we meet Sabo when he was still a kid of 10 years old (same age as Ace by the way). At that time, he could be seen with a tooth less and a band-aid taped to his nose. Her hair is blonde, cut short and curly. He had a large black top hat on his head, on which he had placed a pair of blue glasses. He was still dressed in a blue jacket whose sleeves he rolled up as well as cyan blue shorts held at his waist by a black belt. The latter has a metal buckle with a flower as a pattern. Added to that, he always wore a white scarf around his neck like a tie. At that time,, he walked around with a simple pipe as a weapon. At first glance, he looked like what you might call a street child.
Once an adult, Sabo hasn’t changed much compared to how he looked when he was still a child. Note that he was born on March 20 and was 22 years old just after the ellipse which lasted two years. He is of medium height and still has the same large hat and the same glasses. He always wears a white scarf around his neck and reaching up to his chest. Her blonde hair is now shoulder-length, and her left eye is surrounded by a scar that looks like a burn. He now wears a black coat which he puts on over a dark colored jacket with small buttons. He discarded the shorts in favor of blue pants and boots. It is still armed with a conventional pipe but which is now larger than that which
Sabo is presented as a rather sane character and, like Luffy, he is considerate of the people he loves. We can also see that he is fair when he fights and does not apply preferential treatment according to his opponent as when he fought against Admiral Issho alias Fujitora. Despite the latter being blind, Sabo treated him as an equal and confronted him to the end. Moreover, despite never becoming a pirate like his spiritual brothers, Sabo was very determined to make his dream come true when he was still a kid. As a pirate, he planned to travel and visit the whole world to tell in a book 📖 the stories as well as the places he would see on his travels. And yet, in order to protect his spiritual brethren, he was willing to let go of this dream. Sabo indeed shows a lot of loyalty to Luffy and Ace to the point of even accepting his father’s conditions and living miserable and alone in order to save them. Luffy even said that Sabo is nicer compared to Ace. He supported them,
Furthermore, even though Sabo is of noble lineage, he does not consider himself superior to others and never behaves in a selfish manner. Unlike other members of his family, being a noble does not constitute a special status for him. He did not see people who are not noble as beings who were inferior to him. On the contrary, it loathes its values. Sometimes he regretted being born a noble and was even ashamed of it. His distaste for this status is such that he even intended to leave the Kingdom of Goa.at the age of 17 since a person truly inherits the status of a noble only when he reaches the age of majority, 18 years old. Finally, he left when he was only 10 years old. When we saw him after the ellipse, aged 22, we could see that Sabo retained a lot of his personality of yesteryear.
Besides, he also exhibited behaviors similar to Luffy’s like when he mispronounces people’s names. It also happens that she often cuts an ongoing call abruptly, which tends to annoy her friends. And when he knows or feels that Luffy is in danger, he neglects everything he is doing, even if it is his responsibilities within the Revolutionary Army. This action is due to the fact that he could not protect or save Ace from his execution at Marine Ford . Because of this, he started to show a very strong protective feeling towards Luffy, which is quite ironic considering that during his lifetime Ace also overprotected Luffy following the alleged death 🪦 of Sabo.
The Battles of Sabo
Sabo vs Fujitora
It’s in the Dressrosa Arc in Chapter 751 of the manga, titled Sabo vs. Admiral Fujitora, and in episode 687 of the anime, titled “A Great Showdown! Team Leader Sabo vs. ‘Admiral Fujitora “, that began the confrontation between the blind Admiral and the number 2 of the Revolutionary Army. It followed the fight between the latter and Vice-Admiral Bastille as well as several soldiers of the Navy and which resulted in the easy and rapid victory of the revolutionary. Then followed an exchange between the two characters, during which Sabo revealed to the Admiral that he is the spiritual brother of Ace and Luffy. He went on to tell her that if he ever calls for help, he will come wherever he is in the world and no matter what he is doing because he no longer wants to relive the misfortune of the world. death of Ace. Admiral Fujitora then drew his sword as Sabo activated the pyrokinetic power of his Devil Fruit.. And their clash began with a fiery attack from Sabo with his cane which the Admiral could easily block with his blade as the surrounding Marines were thrown into the air.
Subsequently, the fight between Sabo and Fujitora intensified more and more, which surrounded the area with a barrier of fire. However, the Blind Admiral was able to parry each of the Revolutionary’s subsequent attacks. Then, Issho tried to immobilize Sabo on the ground by manipulating gravity but he was able to escape by igniting. The Admiral then continued by creating a black hole in the direction of Sabo but the latter used his technique Ryuusouken: Ryu no Ibukiin order to stop the evolution of the black hole. Sabo took advantage of the smoke screen caused by his technique to launch a new attack but his opponent was able to parry it again. After that, Admiral Fujitora asked Sabo to go more gently in his attacks since he was blind but Luffy’s brother replied that he made no distinction. Issho then triggered horizontal gravity using a technique called Gravity Sword: Ferocious Tiger.. Despite the force of this gravity, Sabo was able to move, igniting and using the fire to hover. He attacked again and his kick caused a huge explosion of fire that set the whole area on fire. And yet, Issho was able to block this attack with his blade. It was then that the Admiral told Sabo that if he really wanted to bet this game against him, he had to be prepared to pay the full price: his own life. Thus ended the fight without victory or defeat for either.
Sabo vs Jesus Burgess
This clash also took place in the Dressrosa Arc shortly after the fight between Sabo and Admiral Fujitora (between chapters 786 and 792 of the manga and between episodes 728 and 735 of the anime). Luffy found himself in a tight spot after using all of his resources with Gear Fourth to defeat Captain Corsair Don Quixote Doflamingo. Exhausted, he needed a few minutes to get his Haki back. He was therefore at the mercy of his opponent and anyone else. Having noticed the failure of the Pirate in the Straw Hat, Jesus Burgess alias Champion wanted to take the opportunity to kill him and grab his Devil Fruit, the Gumo Gumi no Mi. Coming out of the shadows, he threw himself on Luffy with a dagger in hand but at the same time Sabo also appeared and intervened to save his brother. He sent Burgess waltzing into the background, giving him a terrible kick to the head.
Then ensued an exchange between the Number 2 of the Revolutionary Army and the commander of the 1st fleet of the Blackbeard Pirates . Sabo reveals to him that Luffy and Ace are his brothers and, although he doesn’t want revenge for Ace’s death, he will do anything to protect his other brother. He also revealed to her that he was the holder of the Mera Mera no Mi, which sparked Burgess’ interest. The latter then decided to attack Sabo using his Galleon Lariat technique, which cut the Revolutionary in two as well as the building behind him. Fortunately, thanks to his Devil Fruit which is Logia type, this attack had no repercussions on Sabo who was able to reconstitute himself immediately after. This one counter-attacked with one of his techniques, the Moeru Ryusouken: Kaen Ryuoqui is a combination of flames from Mera Mera no Mi and Ryosouken, his unarmed martial art. Hit head-on, the Blackbeard pirate was thrown away while suffering burns.
After getting his Haki back, Luffy was finally able to kill Doflamingo. For his part, Sabo also managed to defeat Burgess but left his life spared because he felt that it was not necessary to kill him since it was all over. However, Burgess began to provoke him by mocking his brother Ace and his death. He had in mind the idea of killing the Revolutionary by surprise by sticking the knife he was hiding behind his back. His plan almost worked because angry, Sabo approached him and took his head in his hands while telling him to shut up. But when he attempted to stab him aiming for the head, Sabo was able to dodge the blow and attacked him with a searing blow with his Hiken or Burning Fist., a technique he uses as a tribute to Ace. Burgess will then find himself thrown into the rubble, without being able to get up, and that definitively.
When the three spiritual brothers were still children, Sabo had almost the same strength as Ace. As an adult, he had taken part in a large-scale operation with the Revolutionary Army in Dressrosa while the Navy and the Don Quixote Family also participated. He notably took the place of Luffy during the gladiatorial tournament held in the Corrida Colosseum or Coliseum Corridaand won the victory as well as the trophy, the Mera Mera no Mi. Note also that after Monkey D. Dragon, he is the second most powerful member among the Revolutionaries, which proves his great strength. This can be seen in particular in his ability to imitate the claws of a dragon with his fists when he fights or to break steel objects such as sabers, guns or even bazookas with great ease and just with force. with his hands. Another proof of his strength is that he has been able to measure himself and match Fujitora who is, as an Admiral, one of the three most powerful officers in the Navy after the Admiral Commander-in-Chief.
Sabo also has mastery of Busoshoku no Haki or Haki of Weaponry . He has notably been seen using this power in combination with his Ryu no Kagizume or Dragon’s Claw technique to shatter Jesus Burgess l’arm armor into pieces in the arena of the Corrida Coliseum. He also calls on this Haki when using the Ryusoken. Note in passing that Sabo is particularly gifted in mastering this martial art which is based on the hands. One of his attacks based on this Haki is the Ryuusouken: Ryu no Ibuki or Dragon’s Fists: Dragon’s Breath which allows him to explode anything under the ground just by ramming his two fists into it. Sabo used this technique in manga chapter 743 when
It is also known that Revolutionary Army Number 2 is also experienced in the use of the Kenbunshoku no Haki or Haki of Observation . He was seen using this Sensitive Fluid in episode 737 of the anime in order to dodge a burst of gunfire (he never used it in the manga yet). As when he was a child, Sabo still uses his weapon of choice, an iron pipe, when fighting, but this weapon is now larger. In addition, thanks to the power of his Devil Fruit, he is now able to ignite his metal pipe like a fire stick.
Devil Fruit: Mera Mera no Mi
Thanks to his victory in the Corrida Coliseum, Sabo was able to win the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit which previously belonged to his adopted brother Portgas D. Ace. This Devil Fruit offers its user pyrokinetic powers, namely the ability to create fire, to control it or even to transform his body into fire according to his needs. He thus literally becomes a Fire-Man. His attacks linked to his Devil Fruit thus use fire as a basis and he tolerates even extreme heat very well. When the user’s body becomes fire, he can burn his opponent (s) depending on the range of his attack. In addition, his physical attacks can also be enhanced by the use of fire. Added to this, its holder does not fear the vast majority of physical attacks as long as they are not imbued with the Haki of Armament, this is due to the fact that it is
Thanks to his Logia nature, the one who ate this Devil Fruit is able to confront other Logia users, such as Smoker and his smoke with the Moku Moki no Mi or Aokiji and his ice cream with the Hie Hie no Mi . However, this strength is also a weakness since the powers of its three Devil Fruits cancel each other out. Also, another of the weaknesses of the Mera Mera no Mi is that it is hierarchically inferior to the Magu Magu no Mi of Admiral Commander-in-Chief Sakazuki aka Akainu. in the classification of Fruits of the Devil. It is therefore weaker. It turns out that the flames of Mera Mera no Mi can be suffocated by magma. Despite the intangibility of the Fruits of the Logia-type Demon, the user of the Mera Mera no Mi can be severely or even fatally burned, as was the case with Ace.
During his lifetime, Portgas D. Ace aka Ace with the Burning Fistsused his pyrokinetic powers to both fight and operate his motor, wheeled and sail boat, the Striker. He used them in more than ten techniques, such as Kagero, Enkei or Jujika. You should know that Ace already had his abilities three years before he saw Luffy again in the Kingdom of Alabasta. As for Sabo, he was immediately able to call upon the powers of the Mera Mera no Mi within seconds of eating it. However, he did not know how to use it optimally at first. He has happened to inflame his body without wanting to and then to have burning sensations, sometimes even psychologically only. On the other hand, shortly after, he was able to transmit his powers to his staff as can all Logia-type Devil Fruit users. He’s also managed to become intangible, which keeps him from being hurt. For the moment, we only know of two techniques using his Devil Fruit, namely Hiken or Fist of Fire and Moeru Ryusoken: Kaen Ryuo or Fists of Dragon Flames: Flames of the Dragon King . Note that Sabo was seen training to master his powers after the events of Dressrosa.
Sabo was born in Kingdom of Goa, on Dawn Island which is in the East Blue Sea Zone.. Descended from noble parents, he was predestined to marry a nobility girl so that the respect due to his family name would be preserved. And yet her parents seemed to pay little attention to Sabo’s well-being and happiness. When his father came home tired from work, he sent his son straight to his room to study while tearing up one of his drawings. As for his mother, instead of treating her son who was wounded with a knife during a fight between Sabo and the son of a royal family, she preferred to apologize to the latter. It is more important to him to preserve the relations with this royal family than to take care of his bruised son. For his parents, Sabo only served to guarantee their comfort and social status. This is the reason why, at the age of 10,Gray Terminal, a lawless area that looks like a huge open-air public dump where the refuse of society (outlaws, pirates and bandits) are hidden.
Luffy, Ace and Sabo
Shortly after arriving at Gray Terminal, he met Ace. For 5 years, the two kids have amassed money 💰 by becoming real thieves respected by other criminals (probably for their incredible fighting skills). Note that their goal was to become pirates and buy a boat with their loot. This is also the reason why Ace always tried to run away from his adopted little brother Luffy who, too, wanted to follow in their footsteps and become a pirate. Subsequently, after fighting together and defeating the pirate Porchemy, a member of the Bluejam Pirates , in order to save Luffy, the three kids found themselves living together at Dadan and the mountain bandits. Later, they exchanged cups of sake and drank them to confirm their brotherhood. Since that day, the three spiritual brothers have done everything together. Unfortunately, some time later, Sabo was found by his father helped by the Bluejam pirates to confront Ace and Luffy, even kill them. In order to allow his foster brothers to escape, Sabo reluctantly and tearfully agreed to follow his father while Ace screamed for him to stay.
Sabo among the revolutionaries
After he was brought back to his town and returned to his house, he met Sterry who is his new adopted brother. The latter confided to him the existence of an imminent plot orchestrated by the nobles as well as the royal family whose goal is to set fire to the Gray Terminal before inspectors from the World Governmentdo not land. Sabo then took off again in order to warn people and find help. Unfortunately, all the nobles knew about this Machiavellian plan and refused their help. It was only after the fires started and spread that he was able to reach the front door. Barely has he been able to yell at Ace and Luffy to run to flee the place he is pushed aside by the soldiers on guard at the gate. It was ultimately Monkey D. Dragon who found him and to whom he revealed what was going on. Subsequently, he was again caught by his father, locked up and then again escaped aboard his own boat. The latter was destroyed by Saint Jalmack, a World Noble and it was reported to Ace and Luffy that Sabo was dead.
However, Sabo was actually saved by Monkey D. Dragon and brought back by him on his boat to the members of the Revolutionary Army. Unfortunately, it turns out that Ace and Luffy’s adopted brother lost his memory during his accident. Subsequently, he was accepted into the Revolutionaries and underwent both intellectual and physical training on the island of Baltigo alias “La Terre Blanche” or “The Land of Mysteries” where the first headquarters of the Revolutionary Army was located. Throughout his training, he was able to demonstrate his abilities and his reflexes in combat despite having lost his memory. He also succeeded gradually and very quickly to stand up to the highest members of the organization, with the exception of Dragon who knocked him unconscious when he wanted to attack him. When he was 17, he had already achieved some fame among the Revolutionaries for having been able to infiltrate a fortress on his own and free the hostages while having destroyed the castle. He later became the second most powerful member of the organization after Dragon.
Sabo in Dressrosa
Twelve years after his disappearance, Sabo reappeared in the Dressrosa Arc during the tournament at the Corrida Coliseum after he was infiltrated and interrupted a conversation between the Straw Hat Pirate and Bartolomeo aka the Mad Rookie.. Luffy didn’t recognize him right away at first but then burst into tears when he understood while throwing himself in her arms. After a very moving exchange between the two brothers, Luffy gave way in the tournament to Sabo so that he could win the Mera Mera no Mi and eat it. Once disguised as Lucy, Sabo entered the arena and quickly sought to retrieve the Devil Fruit by grabbing onto the battle fish where it was. However, Jesus Burgess countered him and the two characters clashed in a fierce battle that resulted among other things in the fracturing of Burgess’s armor. Afterwards, Sabo made the decision to shorten the final because he absolutely had to come out on top and had other pressing concerns. For this he destroyed the stage,
Once in the basement with Rebecca and her Revolutionary Army teammates Koala and Hack , he unveiled the real reason for their presence in Dressrosa. They had come to investigate and stop the illegal arms traffic which Don Quixote Doflamingo has engaged in in order to avoid any possible conflicts that this business could generate in the future. Later, he is found facing soldiers and senior officers of the Navy. He was blocking them in order to protect Luffy and his comrades because he said it was his responsibility as a big brother. He quickly defeated Vice-Admiral Bastille alias The Shark Slicer as well as several Marines and then confronted Admiral Fujitora. The two protagonists ended their hellish fight with no winner or loser because they were too exhausted.
Then, after rescuing the inhabitants of Dressrosa and rescuing the prisoners from the Coliseum, he set out to search for the place where Doflamingo’s weapons were stored. During an exchange with Koala by snail phone, he learned that his brother Luffy could be in danger. Without wasting a single minute, he joined Luffy and managed to save him narrowly against Jesus Burgess who sought to kill him in order to seize the Devil Fruit of Pirate Straw Hat, the Gomu Gomu no Mi . A new fight then began between Sabo and Burgess which ended with the bitter defeat of the latter.
For his part, Luffy had finally managed to beat Doflamingo. Besides, Koala and Hack had managed to find what they had come for, namely the “list”, and were ready to go. After Sabo told his story to the Mugiwara in Kyros’ house, he had to leave the island because the Cipher Pol Aigis Zero or CP-0 (CP-AIGIS0) was returning towards Dressrosa. We see him fly away on the back of a black crow who is none other than Karasu, commander of the Northern army affiliated with the Revolutionaries.
